CLEVELAND, OH (May 1, 2024) – Vestige Digital Investigations is named an official Contributor to the Verizon 2024 Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR). This marks the ninth year that Vestige has contributed valuable cybersecurity breach data in this report.  And as of today the DBIR is officially published.  Find out which global cybersecurity breaches and threat patterns has got us talking!

The DBIR has been in place for 17 years, with 94 countries involved.  This year’s report  reviewed 30,458 incidents and 10,626 data breaches.

Top takeaways from the 2024 DBIR from the Verizon website:

  •  14% of breaches involved the exploitation of vulnerabilities as an initial access step, almost TRIPLE the amount from last year’s report.  Exploitation of vulnerabilities as an initial access step for a breach grew 180% of last year.
  • 68% of breaches involved a non-malicious human element, like a person falling victim to a social engineering attack or making an error.
  • 62% of financially motivated incidents involved ransomware or extortion, with a median loss of $46,000 per breach; $50,000 was the median loss attributed to BEC – Business Email Compromise.
  • 31% of all breaches over the past 10 years have involved the use of stolen credentials.
  • 15% of breaches involved a third-party or supplier, such as software supply chains, hosting partner infrastructures or data custodians.
  • Falling for scams is FAST.  The median time for uses to fall for phishing emails is less than 60 seconds.
  • Response is slow. It takes around 55 days for organization to remediate 50 % of critical vulnerabilities after patches are available.
