Internet Enabled Devices & IoT

Jump To

As a society we are connecting everything to the Internet.  Sometimes this is well-advised and provides significant benefits.  Sometimes we may have gone too far (see Clairol’s Internet-enabled hair brush https://www.wired.co.uk/article/smart-hair-brush-loreal-withings — “Hey, am I brushing my hair follicles too aggressively?”).  In reality, if it’s attached to a network (internal Local Area Network (LAN), external Wide Area Network (WAN), or the global Internet itself), it likely has data that could find its way into a legal case or investigation.

Like all digital evidence, these devices store content (e.g. documents, files, voice recordings, video, emails, instant messages, etc.) and more importantly, digital artifacts.

This includes devices such as:

  • Google NEST, Amazon Alexa and Echo devices
  • Ring doorbells and other surveillance cameras
  • SmartTVs and other “smart” appliances (e.g. refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, etc.)
  • Wearables
  • Robots (Roomba vacuum cleaners, etc.)

And the list goes on and on.

Whether it’s consumer-grade Internet of Things (IoT) or industrial-grade Internet of Things (IIoT), Vestige has the tools, techniques and know-how to identify, preserve and analyze all types of Internet-enabled devices.
